Ikebukuro Pokémon Center Murder Case

On the evening of March 26, 2026, at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo in the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, a 26-year-old man, Taiki Hirokawa, entered the store and stabbed 21-year-old part-time employee Moe Harukawa multiple times in the neck with a knife. He then stabbed himself in the neck. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigations revealed Hirokawa and Harukawa were former partners. Harukawa had reported Hirokawa for stalking in December 2025, leading to his prior arrests for violating the Anti-Stalking Law and the Firearms and Swords Control Law for possessing a knife. Despite a restraining order and multiple police interventions, the attack occurred during peak hours in front of numerous witnesses.

As the suspect, Taiki Hirokawa, died by suicide at the scene, formal criminal proceedings were not pursued. The case was effectively closed with the death of the perpetrator, and no trial or conviction occurred.

The primary controversy centered on the adequacy of police protective measures. Despite the victim repeatedly reporting severe stalking and the suspect being arrested multiple times, the police released him after a summary prosecution and fine. Critics questioned whether systemic failures in enforcing restraining orders and risk assessment contributed to the fatal outcome, alongside broader concerns about societal desensitization to violence.

The case profoundly shocked Japanese society. It sparked intense debate on the inadequacy of stalking laws and victim protection protocols. A subsequent public opinion poll revealed that 79.7% of respondents believed Japan's public safety had deteriorated over the past decade.
