Reiwa 6 (Wa) 346 Home Invasion and Murder Case

In January 2025, defendant Sato Kenji unlawfully entered the Tokyo apartment of Tanaka Yuki, a 25-year-old office worker. After a violent struggle, Sato stabbed and murdered the victim. The incident, registered under docket number Reiwa 6(wa)346, quickly drew significant public attention and heightened widespread fear regarding random violent crimes in urban areas. The prosecution strongly argued that the act was a premeditated murder following weeks of stalking, while the defense painted the act as an impulsive escalation during a trespass. The case became a crucial test for the judicial system's stance on home invasion leading to homicide.

Life imprisonment. The Tokyo District Court acknowledged the extreme brutality of the crime but ultimately ruled that the prosecution failed to prove extensive prior planning to the degree required for the death penalty under current Japanese legal precedents.
