Reiwa 7 (Wa) 44 Road Traffic Law Violation, Obstruction of Public Duties, and Building Intrusion Case

In March 2025, in Osaka, Japan, defendant Takashi Sato drove under the influence of alcohol and ran a red light. When ordered to stop by patrol officers, he accelerated and struck a police vehicle while attempting to flee. After a short pursuit, he abandoned his car and unlawfully entered a municipal office building through a secured back door, where he was arrested. The prosecution charged him with violating the Road Traffic Law, obstructing public duties by using force against officers, and building intrusion. The Osaka District Court found Takashi Sato guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for 3 years, with a mandatory alcohol treatment program and revocation of his driver’s license.
