Andhra Pradesh Moneylender Tied Woman to Tree and Beat Her Case

In January 2025, a Dalit woman named Durgamma in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district was brutally assaulted by moneylender Srinivasulu and his associate Venkatesh. She had borrowed approximately 5,000 rupees and struggled to repay the amount on time. Enraged, the lenders dragged her to a tree, tied her up, and mercilessly beat her with sticks. A bystander filmed the horrific attack, and the video quickly went viral on social media, sparking nationwide condemnation. Police swiftly intervened, rescuing the victim and arresting the two perpetrators. The incident highlighted the unchecked violence employed by rural moneylenders and the extreme vulnerability of impoverished women in informal credit systems.

The accused were arrested and charged under sections pertaining to attempted murder, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Their bail petitions were rejected by the Kurnool District Court, and the case is currently pending trial.

The central dispute focuses on whether the brutal assault constitutes a premeditated vigilante enforcement of an illegal debt obligation, and the extent to which local law enforcement failed to prevent predatory lending practices and protect vulnerable borrowers from caste-based and gender-based violence.
