In March 2025, in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, India, a young couple—Ravi Ahirwar, from a Scheduled Caste, and Priya Jatav, from an Other Backward Class—were brutally murdered after their secret inter-caste marriage. The couple had eloped and sought police protection, but were tracked down by Priya's family members. Her father, Ramcharan Jatav, along with her two brothers and an aunt, ambushed them on a highway and hacked them to death with axes and knives. The crime, witnessed by passersby and recorded on a mobile phone, ignited immediate outrage. Police arrested the four accused within 48 hours. The case was framed as an "honour killing" that exposed the violent enforcement of caste boundaries in rural India despite legal protections for consensual marriages.

In a fast-track trial concluded in July 2026, the Morena District Court convicted all four accused. Ramcharan Jatav and his son Vikram were sentenced to death, while the other brother, Mahesh, and the aunt, Suman, received life imprisonment. The court found that the murders were premeditated, exceptionally cruel, and aimed at asserting caste supremacy, thus falling within the "rarest of rare" category. The judgment also directed disciplinary action against the police officers who had failed to act on the couple's protection plea. The case is currently under appeal in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The primary legal dispute was whether the murders qualified as the "rarest of rare" cases warranting the death penalty for the convicts. The defence argued that the crime was a spontaneous act of rage provoked by social humiliation, seeking life imprisonment. The prosecution contended that the premeditated, brutal, and public nature of the killings, aimed at upholding caste hierarchy and terrorizing others from inter-caste unions, demanded exemplary capital punishment. A secondary focus involved the alleged failure of local police to adequately protect the couple despite their prior complaint and request for security.

The Morena honour killings triggered widespread protests across India, with student groups and civil society organizations demanding stricter enforcement of anti-honour killing laws and better police accountability. The public and media scrutiny amplified the voices of inter-caste couples living under threat. The Madhya Pradesh government subsequently announced a special protection cell for couples facing community opposition. The case also reignited a national debate on the death penalty, with human rights groups arguing that capital punishment does not address the root social prejudice, while proponents claimed it serves as a necessary deterrent against caste-based violence.
