2025 Tirupati Temple Stampede

On January 8, 2025, a fatal stampede occurred near the Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh, India, when thousands of devotees gathered to collect tokens for the Vaikunta Ekadasi darshan. As gates opened at a distribution center, the surging crowd triggered a crush, resulting in at least six deaths and over thirty injuries. Most victims were women and the elderly. The incident provoked public outrage and prompted the immediate suspension of several local officials. A high-level judicial inquiry was launched to examine lapses in crowd management and planning by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and the police.

No criminal charges were filed against individuals. The Andhra Pradesh government ordered a judicial inquiry and provided ex gratia compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families of each deceased. Several TTD officials and police personnel were placed under suspension pending the inquiry report, with administrative reforms promised.

Whether the TTD and the police adequately anticipated and prepared for the massive gathering, failure to implement an organized queuing system, absence of effective crowd-control measures, and allegations that sudden changes in token distribution locations directly triggered the deadly surge.

The stampede reignited national debate over the safety of large-scale religious gatherings and led to urgent calls for infrastructure modernization at pilgrimage sites. TTD announced sweeping changes to its token distribution system and crowd-management protocols. The tragedy also prompted other major temples across India to review their security arrangements, and it heightened public demand for holding administrative bodies accountable for mass-casualty incidents.
