Mumbai Train Blasts: 12 Defendants Acquitted Case

In 2025, the Supreme Court of India acquitted 12 men who had been convicted for the 2006 Mumbai suburban train bombings that killed 209 people and injured over 700. The defendants, mostly young Muslim men, were sentenced to death or life imprisonment in 2015 under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. The apex court found that the prosecution's case relied entirely on confessions extracted under custodial torture, hostile and unreliable witness testimonies, and lacked any independent forensic or material evidence linking the accused to the blasts. Conversely, victims' families and several political figures expressed deep anguish, arguing that justice had been denied for a heinous mass-casualty attack.
