Novel Summary
In a crumbling port city during an era of gilded reform, a young docker steps into an illegal boxing ring to pay his mother's medical bills. There he uncovers a ledger soaked in smuggling profits and official bribes. As a journalist, a compromised inspector, and the boxer himself each read the same evidence through the lenses of ambition, guilt, and class prejudice, the truth becomes a phantom—visible only in the blood it leaves behind. A Melvillian tale of fists, corruption, and the terrible weight of subjective proof.
