The Pale Motive

In the fictional Republic of New Arcadia, an undocumented immigrant named Adrian Waldeck is acquitted of a firearms charge after a landmark supreme court ruling on mens rea. Desperate to escape his nonexistent identity, he murders and usurps the life of wealthy industrialist Sebastian Moreau, a near-perfect physical double. As he flawlessly executes every technical detail of his impersonation—business dealings, social mannerisms, encrypted communications—the hollow reason behind his crime becomes an unbearable weight.
