In the fictional European nation of Valdoria, a lineman's death at a state-owned power dam sparks a labyrinth of conflicting memories. As the widow, co-workers, executives, and eyewitnesses each recount irreconcilable versions of the event, a journalist uncovers a trail of bureaucratic arrogance and suppressed evidence. Inspired by Georges Simenon's atmospheric style, the novel explores how the complacency of a monopoly utility becomes the accomplice to tragedy, and how subjective truths drown the quest for justice.
