Novel Summary
In the fractured Commonwealth of Acastia, immigration lawyer Elena Thorne becomes pathologically fixated on Toshkhua v. Smith et al, a habeas corpus case involving a detainee who vanished from the Veridian Detention Center. Official records claim Andrej Toshkhua was deported, but a forged Notice to Appear and a corrupted surveillance loop whisper of a more sinister erasure. Thorne’s hunt for procedural justice leads her to Julian Croft, a conceptual artist who treats human disappearance as a sculptural medium and the legal apparatus as his stage. As she descends into Croft’s world of aestheticized murder, her zeal for the truth transforms into complicity. The novel charts her unravelling as she realizes that Croft’s final masterpiece—an act of artistic self-immolation designed to obliterate the entire rotten system—requires her own conscience as the primary exhibit, proving that the hunger for truth can devour the seeker from within.
