Ankita Bhandari Murder Case

In September 2022, 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari worked as a receptionist at Vanatara Resort in Uttarakhand, India. She was allegedly pressured to provide sexual services to guests, including Pulkit Arya, the resort owner's son and a local political figure's kin. When she refused, Arya, resort manager Ankit Gupta, and helper Saurabh Bhaskar took her to the Chilla canal on 18 September. Following a confrontation, they pushed her into the canal, causing her death by drowning. Her parents filed a missing person report, leading to a probe. The accused initially misled police but were arrested after evidence emerged. The body was recovered, and the case triggered nationwide outrage over women's safety and political impunity. A special investigation team filed a comprehensive chargesheet for murder, abduction, and destruction of evidence.

The trial is ongoing in a fast-track court in Kotdwar. The three accused have been formally charged with murder, abduction, and causing disappearance of evidence. They remain in judicial custody. No final conviction has been delivered as of the latest proceedings; the court is examining forensic and witness evidence.
