Novel Summary
In the decaying maritime republic of Valderra, aged Dante Orsini walks free after forty-seven years in the prison fortress of Rocca Nera, convicted for the brutal murder of merchant Enzo Bellini. His only possessions: a discolored photograph of a young woman and a single page from a trial transcript with a name blacked out. Returning to the fog-bound port of Porto Rosso, he navigates a society built on the bones of old secrets. As Dante peels away layers of official lies, he discovers that his ruin was not the work of diabolical masterminds, but of Livia Bellini's small, bored desire for a lace-trimmed life and her lover Angelo Russo's petty gambling debts. The great judicial conspiracy that swallowed him whole was born from a magistrate’s need for a promotion, a police commissioner’s craving for a quiet retirement, and the city’s collective willingness to look away. Each revelation echoes Balzac's grim truth: the roots of vast injustice are always tangled in the banal soil of human weakness.
