In the gritty port city of Verraine, private eye Martin Cross takes a routine infidelity job tailing a mid-level union fixer. But when he realizes someone is mirroring his every move—a shadow tracking the tracker—he stumbles into a labyrinth of a case that the police have already closed. What appears to be a perfect contract killing, orchestrated by a crime syndicate under the guise of a racketeering statute, unravels to reveal that the "mastermind" was merely lucky, and the "victim" was lethally negligent.
