The Necessary Lie

In the winter of 2018, Lena Corbin is a small-time courier caught in the jaws of a federal mandatory minimum sentencing scheme. Her only escape from a decade in prison is a deal with prosecutor Marcus Hale: infiltrate the remote Appalachian compound of the Covenant of the Final Mercy, led by the charismatic prophet Father Elias. The faithful believe the world is irredeemable and that a final “cleansing baptism” will transport them to eternal grace. Lena, posing as a broken pilgrim named Ruth, quickly realizes the baptism is a meticulously planned mass suicide. Trapped in a community where doubt is a sin and exposure means death, she must weave an intricate web of lies to survive. As the appointed hour draws near and the white robes are stitched, Lena discovers the state may be just as complicit in the coming tragedy as the prophet himself. With only a handful of doubters to aid her, she must navigate a moral minefield to save the innocent from a faith that has become a pyre, only to find that escaping the lie is its own harrowing sentence.
